Local tracker
The local tracker watches folders you select and keeps their ctxfs representation current. The tracker and ctxfs server are separate per-user processes; starting the tracker ensures ctxfs is running first.
Requirements
Section titled “Requirements”- macOS or Linux
- Python 3.11 or 3.12 with
pip - A local folder you want ctxd to track
Install
Section titled “Install”Install ctxd from PyPI:
pip install ctxdctxd --versionThe package includes the CLI, tracker, and ctxfs. ctxfs is not installed as a separate system service.
Start in ctxfs mode
Section titled “Start in ctxfs mode”ctxd backend set ctxfsctxd tracker startctxd backend statusSelecting the backend starts ctxfs. tracker start launches the tracker as a
detached process for the current user. Start it again after a reboot; automatic
login registration is not currently installed.
Add folders
Section titled “Add folders”ctxd folders add ~/Documents --name Documentsctxd folders add ~/Projects/example --name Examplectxd folders listEach folder name becomes a CLI path alias, such as Documents/notes.md. The
underlying ctxfs prefix has a generated root ID, but ordinary CLI use does not
require it.
Monitor
Section titled “Monitor”ctxd tracker statusctxd backend statusA healthy local setup reports Backend: ctxfs, ctxfs healthy: True, and a
running tracker.
Move a folder
Section titled “Move a folder”Remove the old registration and add the new path:
ctxd folders remove Documentsctxd folders add /new/path/to/folder --name DocumentsThis creates a new root identity. Preserving a root identity across a move is not currently exposed by the CLI.
Stop tracking a folder
Section titled “Stop tracking a folder”ctxd folders remove DocumentsThis removes the tracked root from ctxd. It does not delete the source folder.
Upgrade
Section titled “Upgrade”Upgrade the package, then restart:
ctxd tracker stoppip install --upgrade ctxdctxd tracker startConfigured folders and local ctxfs state are preserved.
Uninstall
Section titled “Uninstall”ctxd tracker stoppip uninstall ctxdUninstalling the package does not remove ~/.ctxd. Review and remove that
directory separately only if you intend to delete all ctxd-managed local state.
Troubleshooting
Section titled “Troubleshooting”If ctxfs is unreachable:
ctxd config get backendctxd backend statusctxd tracker statusIf a change has not appeared, restart tracking with ctxd tracker stop followed
by ctxd tracker start, then check ctxd tracker status.
